MARINE SURVEYOR’S

Salary range:

• Cayman Islands: CI$58,440.00 – CI$78,960.00

• United Kingdom: STG£46,080 – STG£62,880

The Cayman Islands Shipping Registry (Cayman Registry), a division of the Maritime

Authority of the Cayman Islands (Cayman Maritime), was established in 1903 and today registers the full

spectrum of vessel types, including commercial ships and private pleasure yachts. The Registry maintains

headquarters in Cayman; a European Regional Office in Southampton, UK; and has additional

representatives in Ft. Lauderdale, FL; London; Italy; France; Athens; Singapore; Hong Kong and Japan.

We are now seeking to employ two Marine Surveyors, one based in George Town, Grand Cayman and one based in Southampton, United Kingdom to carry out statutory surveys and audits on new and existing yachts, passenger and cargo ships and provide technical support to other agencies.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct statutory surveys on all ship types in accordance with national legislation and international Conventions. Undertake audits of companies and ships in accordance with the ISM & ISPS Codes, and issue related certification. Conduct Port State Control inspections in accordance with national legislation as applicable. Carry out inspections and investigations onboard Cayman vessels as may be required from time to time.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

The applicant should possess an appropriate qualification from a marine or nautical institution and relevant seagoing experience as a certificated ship officer holding or having held a valid STCW II/2 or III/2 certificate of competency and have maintained their technical knowledge of ships and their

operation since gaining their certificate of competency and not less than three years at sea as an

officer in the deck or engine department; or a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a tertiary institution within a relevant field of engineering or science, and at least 3 years post graduate experience in a relevant capacity.

The applicant must have experience as either a Flag State Surveyor with a reputable Maritime

Administration or Classification Society surveyor conducting statutory surveys.

The applicant should possess the ability to work as part of a team and on their own initiative,

demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, excellent verbal, written communication and strong

computer literacy skills.

The successful applicant will be based in George Town, Grand Cayman or Southampton, United

Kingdom. Frequent travel worldwide, often at short notice, is an essential feature of this post. This will involve visits to our client’s vessels and their shore based establishments, to carry out statutory surveys and audits

The Ministry of Transport seeks the services of a qualified and experienced individual to fill the post of Senior Marine Surveyor for the Department of Maritime Administration. The post holder will be part of an active team tasked with performing the statutory duties required by a high quality shipping register.

The Senior Marine Surveyor will be responsible for applying and enforcing the provisions of the International Conventions regulating ship safety and marine pollution prevention as applicable to Bermuda registered ships world-wide and other ships in Bermuda waters. The post holder will also conduct inspections, surveys or examinations of marine vessels to assess monitor and report on their condition and the effectiveness of on-board management systems and compliance of company systems with international norms. Surveyors also investigate deaths and serious accidents occurring on, or affecting, Bermuda ships and prepare reports for international scrutiny.

Applicants must possess a Master/Chief Engineer Certificate of Competency or a

Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, plus membership of an appropriate professional body, or possess chartered engineer status. Also, applicants must possess the International Safety Management (ISM) and International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Codes Lead Auditor Certification. A minimum of five (5) years post qualification experience to include two (2) years experience at a senior level on a ship and three (3) years experience in marine surveying is required.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch is a specialist unit within the Department for Transport. It investigates all types of marine accidents, determining their circumstances and causes with the aim of improving safety at sea and preventing accidents in the future.

You’ll be highly motivated and analytical, will hold a STCW95 A-II/2 (Deck) certificate of competency and have command experience, or equivalent fishing industry qualifications and experience.

Excellent interpersonal skills will be a pre-requisite to enable you to work with stakeholders from a wide variety of backgrounds, and the ability to deal sensitively with the bereaved.

Very good writing skills will be required together with the ability to adapt your style of delivery depending on the target audience.

You must be prepared to travel throughout the UK (for which you’ll need a full UK driving licence) as well as overseas. You must also be a British citizen as this is a reserved post.
